Last March I had my MBA Marketing & Sales final exam on Virgin Galactic. Professor Ana Rumschisky asked the class to write a brand positioning statement and to describe how we would had launched the product into the market. The task was complex due to the peculiarity of the product. We had to market more than a luxury product, we had to sell the dream that we all had done when we were children, but at a very expensive price! I found it amazing and I really enjoyed the exam!
Today, what three months ago I thought it was just a cool MBA case comes out on the news with a nice, interesting and somehow funny article. PayPal would be thinking on how space travelers may pay their purchase while flying the surface of our planet. About planetary payment, PayPal president David Marcus told CNNMoney:
We don’t have all the answers right now, but it’s clear we won’t be using cash when we’re in space. We feel it’s time now, not next year, not when space tourism starts to happen, to start figuring out what this looks like.
What to say? This is what I call a real long term strategy, or a list vision! Is it too long? Honestly I don’t know and I cannot say if it will work, but of course having an idea about where we want to get to, it is the best way to identify the path that will allow us to reach our goals.
While looking forward to hearing PayPal’s news, I will continue planning my first flight to the moon.
